Still considered an active volcano, Mt. Fuji is just one of 110 live volcanoes scattered throughout the seismically active country of Japan. Strong earthquakes heighten the risk of volcanic eruptions in the region. This is exactly what happened the last time Mt. Fuji erupted some 300 years ago, on December 12th, 1707. Just 49 days after a violent earthquake of a magnitude 8.6 hit southern Japan, Mt. Fuji erupted spewing ash and smoke that could be seen as far away as Edo (Tokyo).
