Quote for the 5th Edition Mt.Fuji Guidebook

"And here’s the thing; 2025 is the year Mt. Fuji stopped being a mountain you just climbed and became a mountain you applied for. On the Shizuoka side, you’re downloading an app, watching a safety video, sitting through an online class, and taking a quiz like it’s driver’s ed before they even let you near the trail gate. Pass, and you get your ticket. Fail, and… well, better luck next time, kid.

Over on the Yamanashi side, it’s a different flavor of red tape. You book online, swear allegiance to a manifesto of safety and environmental rules, and try not to mix up your ¥4,000 trail gate fee with your totally separate mountain hut booking, because God forbid one ticket cover both.

It’s still the same sacred, snowcapped volcano on the postcards. But now it’s also a form, a password, and a checklist. Fuji 2.0, half holy ground, half bureaucratic obstacle course."

About the Author
Richard Reay -
Professional Mt. Fuji guide since 2008. With thousands of hours on the mountain across all routes, in every season, in-season, off-season, and on traditional pilgrimage trails, Richard has seen Fuji in every mood. This book distills that real-world experience into clear, practical steps for safe and successful planning.

He even made it on NHK’s Japan’s 100 Most Famous Mountains as one of the few non-Japanese official guides, a rare feat, like finding a vending machine in Japan that doesn’t work.

Why This Guidebook Matters in 2026

Climbing Mt. Fuji is not just a hike. It is a collision of history, ritual, weather, and raw exhaustion. Our mission has always been to cut through the noise and give climbers the straight truth, the insider hacks, and the warnings that can save a life when the air thins and the summit still feels impossibly far away.

What started as a rough survival kit — hand-drawn timings, brutal checklists, cultural insights that connected modern hikers with centuries of Fuji pilgrims — grew into the best-selling English Mt. Fuji climbing guidebook. Guests insisted it be expanded, and it did. Since then, fifth updated editions have been published, each one tracking new rules, access gates, hut systems, and climate changes. Richard even appeared on NHK’s Japan’s 100 Most Famous Mountains as an English-speaking Fuji expert, cementing his reputation as one of the few professional voices on the mountain.

Now the 2026 Edition is here: sharper, tougher, and more brutally honest than ever. This is not a sugar-coated brochure. It is the no-nonsense handbook that tells you what works, what doesn’t, and how to get up and down in one piece. Packed with updated regulations, trail quotas, hut booking systems, safety requirements, and proven strategies from thousands of guided climbs, this book is the real Fuji playbook.

If you are serious about climbing Japan’s most iconic peak, don’t gamble with outdated blogs or half-truths. Trust the guidebook that has been relied on by climbers from around the world for over a decade.

"Well worth it! This is a "must read" for anyone who wishes to be successful in climbing Mt. Fuji. Don't be fooled by the apparent simplicity of the mountain - it is a tough and grueling climb and Richard knows all there is to know about it. It was easy to underestimate Mt. Fuji. My advice to anyone who wants to climb this mountain is to read the book, it is time and money well spent and if you're fortunate, you'll have Richard to guide you to the top."

FAQ
What’s new in the 2026 edition?
The 2026 edition includes all updated rules and regulations, a fully revised off-season section, and the latest mountain hut and route recommendations.

Do I need a reservation to climb Mt. Fuji?
Yes. Starting in 2025, all major trails require advance reservations and proof of booking. Daily quotas and timed entry windows are enforced. If you arrive without a reservation, you may be turned away at the gate.

How much does it cost to climb Mt. Fuji?
Expect to pay a mandatory ¥4,000 climbing fee, plus hut reservations, meals, and transport. Mountain huts can cost ¥10,000–¥14,000 per night, with meals extra. Prices have risen sharply in recent years, so budgeting properly is essential.

What gear is essential?
Good boots, rain gear, warm layers, gloves, and a headlamp are non-negotiable. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as prices on the mountain are high. hiking poles are optional but useful.

When is the best time to climb Mt. Fuji?
The official climbing season runs from early July to early September, when trails and huts are open. Expect crowds. For solitude, consider late June or mid-September — but conditions can be unpredictable.

Can I climb Mt. Fuji in one day?
It is possible if you get an early start and are in great shape but not recommended. “Bullet climbs” (overnight or same-day attempts without hut rest) are discouraged and often restricted. Altitude sickness is common without proper rest. (See guidebook for more tips)

What makes this guidebook different?
This is the only English-language guidebook written by a professional Mt. Fuji guide with over 500 climbs. It is not a tourist brochure; it is the blunt, honest playbook you need to climb Fuji safely and successfully.
