Japan Cycle Tours

Cycling Tours in Japan:

Recently, there seems to be a bit of a cycling tour boom in Japan, with more and more travelers preferring a more intimate outdoor first-hand experience than the typical group bus tour that we have all taken at one time or another. Cycle tours in Japan are on the rise with more accessible trails and experienced guides emerging, creating an exclusive personal serene tour experience.

The following are some Cycle Tours currently available in Japan, with each location offering a uniquely different perspective. Tokyo also has various cycle tours available, nevertheless due to the scarcity of actual cycle only routes available in Tokyo, we have listed the following based on tour experience and accessibility.
  • Shimanami Kaido (2-3 Days)
  • Takayama/Hida (1 Day Tours)
  • Kyoto/Arashiyama (1 Day Tours)
  • Hiroshima (1 Day Tours)
  • Hokkaido (Summer Only Tours)

Two of the most remote Cycle tours available in Japan are the Takayama/Hida Cycle Tour and the Shimanami Kaido Cycle Tour, each offering an uniquely secluded tour perspective and each are basically recent tours only now available to the public.

Southern Japan Island Cycle Tour (Shimanami Kaido Cycling Tour):

Island hopping thru Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, exploring breathtaking ocean views, spectacular suspension bridges, unique native culture what else could you possibly ask for in a travel vacation! We often receive enquires asking for original tours that cover remote areas that are not on the standard Japan travel guide. As a result, we have created this unique tour that brings together unspoiled heritage and remote traditional culture. This unique tour combines rural culture and natural wonders, by exploring remote islands nestled deep in the heart of rustic Japan allowing you to feel the traditional charms of Japanese culture.
Shikoku is the smallest and least populated of Japan’s four main islands. It lies south of the Seto Inland Sea, across the water from Okayama and Hiroshima. Shikoku hasn’t really been on the tour map for most people, even Japanese, and certainly not for foreign visitors. The island has always been exceptional, a conservative place where much of the old Japan remains. Here, even non-Japanese are often overcome by feelings of nostalgia for a pre-modern Japanese world to which they haven’t any connection. The Shimanami Kaido route connects the towns of Onomichi (Honshu) and Imabari (Shikoku).
Shimanami-4 Separate bridge segments and cycle only routes cover 6 spectacular suspension bridges and 7 distinctive islands. The total distance from Onomichi to Imabari is about 70 km. As there is so much to explore in and around the 7 amazing islands that doing the route in a 2 day or a 3 day course with a local professional guide is highly recommended to fully explore the unique culture found on these remote islands. As these remote untouched islands do not nomally make the guidebooks, the Shimanami Kaido Cycle Route is a-one-of-a-kind journey covering intact rural secluded islands in the heart of Japan producing an incredible cycling tour experience.
